Walkers, Jan Steen, circa 1660

Description of the picture:

Walkers – Jan Steen. Around 1660. Oil on wood. 39×30

Jan Steen is one of the outstanding masters of Dutch household painting of the 17th century. The theme of fun, entertainment and merry feasts to Wall (circa 1626-1679), the owner of the zucchini, was familiar to no one else. The artist in his paintings does not seek psychological analysis of the characters. He depicts only what anyone who came into the tavern, where there was a fun revel, can see. In the image of a smiling good-natured reveler, Stan portrayed himself. He kind of invites the viewer to condescendingly laugh at him and his wife Margaret, who is sleeping sweetly, not having a vulture to change an uncomfortable position. A disorder dominates everywhere, giving an additional comic to the situation: shards of a broken pipe are lying on the floor, in the foreground is a large shoe that has flown off the mistress’s foot. The whole scene is shown to the smallest detail with great warmth and humor.
